A denture is an appliance which is worn to replace lost or missing teeth. A full denture replaces all of the natural teeth in either jaw. Like dental implants and bridges, a partial denture is used to fill the spaces created by lost or missing teeth. Dentures also provide structure to your smile so that you do not get a sunken appearance which can develop when teeth are missing.
In denture work we focus on function, comfort and creating a natural look to help you enjoy life without worry or embarrassment. Movement from poor fitting dentures can irritate the gums, cause soreness, slurred speech and clicking noises. Our laboratory technicians often work beside the dentist to help achieve the patients’ exact specification and requirements.
Conventional dentures are fabricated based on a metal frame and are rigid, they contain visible metal clasps to anchor to your existing teeth. Here at LS1 Dental in Leeds we offer Valplast® flexible dentures. Based on a flexible material, they are easier to wear, comfortable, adapt to slight changes in the shape of your mouth (e.g. when eating) and are cosmetically indistinguishable from your natural teeth.

FAQs ABOUT DENTURES IN LEEDS AT LS1 DENTAL
What is a denture?
A denture is a dental appliance which is worn to replace missing teeth. Dentures can enable you to enjoy a healthy diet and smile with confidence. A complete/full denture is one that replaces all of the natural teeth in both the upper or lower jaws. A partial denture fills in the spaces created by lost or missing teeth and can be secured to your natural teeth with/without metal clasps.
Why should I replace my missing teeth with dentures?
Replacing lost or missing teeth has both cosmetic and functional benefits. Dentures can replace your natural teeth and help you enjoy your food whilst simultaneously providing support to your cheeks and lips. Without this support, loose muscles can make a person appear older and make it difficult to eat and speak.
What materials are dentures made of?
The base of a denture is usually made of either acrylic (plastic) or metal (chrome). The teeth on a denture are normally made of acrylic and can be made to match your natural teeth, which is especially important in the case of partial dentures.
What will my new dentures feel like?
New dentures may feel awkward and uncomfortable at first because you have not become accustomed to them. The dentures may feel loose while the muscles of your cheek and tongue learn to hold them in place. Should this continue, consult your dentist in Leeds at LS1 Dental. Minor adjustments may be necessary.
Will dentures make me look different?
Dentures can be made to closely resemble your natural teeth and provide harmony between your mouth, lips and cheeks. Modern cosmetic dentures such as Valplast dentures, can be indistinguishable from your surrounding teeth because they do not have any visible metal clasps to hold them in place.
Will I be able to eat normally with dentures?
At LS1 Dental in Leeds we would advise you to start with small portions of soft foods cut into small pieces and gradually add solid items to your diet, as you become more confident and familiar with your new dentures. Soon your tongue and facial muscles will adapt to the new dentures.
Will dentures affect my speech?
Initially some patients find it difficult to pronounce certain words when wearing their new dentures, but overtime this settles and becomes easier. Eventually you should find that your speech becomes clearer and more defined.
Will my sense of taste be affected?
This is quite a common question asked by our patients at LS1 Dental in Leeds. Luckily your teeth are not directly related to the way you taste food. Although the palette has taste buds which can sense taste, taste buds are mainly located on the tongue and are not damaged or affected by dentures. However, the ability to sense hot food and beverages may be affected, so for a while it is a good idea to avoid very hot food and drinks.
How long should I wear my dentures?
During the first few days, it is advisable to wear your dentures most of the time. This will allow you to adjust to your new dentures and let them settle in. Once you have adjusted to your dentures you may remove them at night before going to bed. Removing dentures at night allows gums to rest and helps promote oral health. If you decide to wear your dentures overnight, it is important that you clean them thoroughly before going to bed, just as you would clean your natural teeth.
How do I take care of my dentures?
When you are not wearing your dentures, they should be stored in a container containing enough water to cover them. Like natural teeth, dentures must be brushed daily to remove food debris and plaque. Brushing helps prevent dentures becoming stained and helps your mouth stay fresh and healthy. Specific denture cleaning brushes available but a normal soft bristled toothbrush can also be used. An effervescent denture cleaner can be used remove stubborn stains.
